Tankless units heat water on demand with no storage tank and effectively unlimited hot water, but cost more upfront and often require larger gas line sizing and updated venting. If your household regularly runs out of hot water or you want to reclaim the space a tank takes up, tankless is worth pricing out.

Electric units are simpler to install (no venting required) and often have a lower upfront equipment cost, but typically cost more to operate long-term where electric rates are high.
Sizing is based on household size and peak simultaneous hot water demand, not just square footage. As a general reference: 1–2 people typically need around 30 gallons, 2–3 people around 40 gallons, 3–4 people around 50 gallons, and larger households or homes with multiple bathrooms running simultaneously often need 65–80 gallons or a tankless system sized for peak flow rate.
Massachusetts requires a permit and inspection for water heater replacement — this isn't optional, and skipping it can cause problems when you sell the home. We handle the permit application and coordinate the inspection as part of every installation.
