How to Prevent Plumbing Problems During a Massachusetts Winter

Massachusetts winters are hard on plumbing systems that weren't built with insulation or attention in mind. A little prep in the fall reduces the odds of an emergency call in January.

Before the first hard freeze

• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses; shut off exterior spigots if they have an interior shut-off
• Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, attics, and garages
• Seal drafts near where pipes enter the home from outside
• Know where your main water shut-off valve is, and confirm it turns freely

During a hard freeze

Keep the heat on (even when away), open cabinet doors under exterior-wall sinks, and let vulnerable faucets drip slightly overnight.

If you're leaving town

Don't turn the heat off entirely — set it no lower than 55°F, and consider having someone check the house periodically during extended cold snaps.

⚠️ A burst pipe can flood a home fast. If you find one, shut off your main water valve immediately, then call a plumber.
