Both tank and tankless water heaters do the same job โ the right choice depends on your household's hot water habits and your home's setup.
Stores and continuously heats a set volume of water (typically 40-50 gallons for a household). Lower upfront cost, simpler installation, and a familiar failure mode if something goes wrong.
Heats water on demand as it flows through the unit โ no storage tank, no standby heat loss, and technically unlimited hot water. Higher upfront cost and installation complexity, since it typically requires larger gas line sizing and proper venting.
If your household regularly runs out of hot water, or you want to reclaim the space a tank takes up, tankless is worth considering. If your current tank works fine for your household size, a like-for-like tank replacement is usually the more cost-effective choice.
โ ๏ธ Water heaters involve gas, electricity, and pressurized hot water. If you smell gas or see a leak from the tank itself, shut off the water/gas supply if you can do so safely and call a licensed plumber.
